Japan Center Malls Sumo Exhibition is coming this month on September 29. Get your Sumo-cabulary up to speed before you see the upcoming Japan Center Malls’ Sumo Exhibition.

Dohyō (土俵) – The ring in which sumo wrestling bouts are held. A modern dohyō is a circle of rice-straw bales 15 ft(4.55m) in diameter, and for official tournaments is mounted on a square platform of clay 18.7 ft(6.7m) on a side, and 34 to 60 cm high. The surface is covered by sand.

Rikishi (力士) –  A professional sumo wrestler.

Mawashi (廻し) is the belt (loincloth) that the sumo wrestler wears during training or in competition.

Chankonabe (ちゃんこ鍋) is a Japanese stew a one-pot dish commonly eaten in vast quantity by sumo wrestlers as part of a weight-gain diet.

Gyōji (行司)Referee of professional sumo matches in Japan.

Chonmage (丁髷) – A form of Japanese traditional topknot haircut worn today by sumo.

Origin – Sumo origins go back to the Japan’s Yayoi period (c. 300 BCE – c. 300 CE)

Established as the national sport in Japan in 1909.
